Traveling With The Coolest Phone On The Planet -- Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge

Written by a Forbes Contributor Larry Magid

I don’t pretend to know all the reasons why iPhone sales are down for the first time, but after using Samsung’s Galaxy S7 Edge for the past several weeks, I think I have a clue. The iPhone has never been the cheapest phone on the planet and now it’s not the coolest one either.
I took an S7 Edge with me to Hong Kong, Shenzhen, China, Hanoi and Seoul and — in each city — people stared at the phone and asked me about it. Admittedly, it got relatively few stares in its home country of Korea, but even in tech savvy Shenzhen (where iPhones are built), people took a second glance when I pulled out this impressive looking phone. I’ve also been using the phone in Silicon Valley and San Francisco where it’s also regarded as innovative and stylish. Here’s a review from Forbes contributor Ewan Spence.

I’m not suggesting you should buy a phone based on looks nor would I say that looks are the only reason to consider the S7, but in a world where a phone is sometimes seen as a status symbol or at least a fashion statement, it doesn’t hurt to have one that’s eye catching.
What’s unique about the Edge (and also true with Samsung’s earlier S6 Edge and Edge+) is its wrap around glass screen that not only looks cool, but can also display feeds and other content, including a pane that exposes some of your frequently used apps. Yes, it’s a bit of a gimmick and far from necessary but the same can be said for a lot of iPhone features, like Live Photos.
Beyond looks
As nice as it is to be carrying around a cool-looking phone, I’m not prone to recommend anything strictly on visual appeal, which is why it’s good to report that the phone has a lot of other redeeming values like an adequate-sized 5.5 inch screen, the ability to add storage via a MicroSD card, wireless charging and slimmed-down Samsung software that’s no longer a bloaty as it once was. It also has a larger (3600 mAh battery) battery that makes a real difference and a faster processor than its predecessors. One of the best new features is water resistance. You don’t want to go swimming with it or run it through the washing machine, but I didn’t have to worry when I spilled a glass of water on the phone.

The finger print reader works well so you don’t have to worry about typing in your PIN number.
One of my favorite features is the 12 megapixel rear camera with what Samsung calls “dual-pixel technology,” which is advertised to capture to “better photos in low-light environments and focuses faster than the blink of an eye.” I don’t know about that hype but I do know that the pictures are very good. And all you have to do to access the camera is to press the home button twice, making it a lot easier to take pictures.
