Young boy from Finland gets a big reward from Facebook for discovery of a bug in Instagram
Jani, a ten year old boy from Finland has been awarded $10,000 by Facebook after he came upon a bug in Instagram. The bug let him delete any comment he wanted on the platform, whether it belonged to other users including celebrities and even Mark Zuckerberg.Jani reported this flaw to Facebook in February, and it was fixed thereafter. The tech giant awarded the boy for his discovery in March. Facebook, similar to other tech giants; Google and even Microsoft, has a bug bounty for those who uncover bugs on major platforms. In February, the company announced it has paid $4.3 million as rewards as part of this program. This money was rewarded to more than 200 security researchers that had submitted a total of 2,400 reports since the launch of the platform, and company, in 2011.
The boy added that while he was playing around on Instagram, he found that he was able to mess around with the application’s codes on servers, he also wants to become a security researcher when he grows up because he thinks security is an important issue. Not just that, this 10 year old has set accounts even when the terms of the applications mention that the user must be 13 years of age or above. The Finnish boy, along with his twin brothers, has caught bugs in different websites before although this is the first time he has been awarded for his efforts. Jani is the youngest security researcher that has received an award from this bounty program. The previous youngest researcher was 13 years old at the time that he discovered a bug. Last year, Facebook rewarded $936,000 to 210 researchers.
