Leaked Feature That Makes The Samsung Galaxy S8 Worth Waiting For
The intensity of rivalry between Apple AAPL +0.42%
and Samsung is helping drive the innovation that we have seen in iPhone
and Galaxy devices. As a result, Samsung and Apple smartphones are
shipping with better hardware and software. That is why the anticipation
for the iPhone 7 and Samsung Galaxy S8 is building up. But there is one
specific rumored feature that makes the upcoming Galaxy S8 sound like
it will be worth waiting for: a 4K UHD display.
The 5.1-inch Galaxy S7 and 5.5-inch Galaxy S7 Edge devices already have noticeably gorgeous OLED displays. That is why DisplayMate reported that the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge devices have “the best smartphone displays.” And there are reports that Apple will be playing catch-up when it switches to OLED for the iPhone 8 in 2017. If Samsung is able to add a 4K UHD display to the Galaxy S8 by March or April, then it would most likely be crowned for having the best smartphone display again next year. Samsung is expected to announce the Galaxy S8 at Mobile World Congress in February 2017.
SamMobile also pointed out that a high-resolution display would enhance the virtual reality experience. Plus, the Galaxy S8 will most likely ship with Android N Daydream VR support. Most of the current virtual reality headset platforms that exist today have to be paired with smartphone devices to function.
There is another reason why it seems realistic that a 4K display would be added to the Galaxy S8. Samsung tends to refresh its displays every two years. For example, Samsung switched from an HD display in the Galaxy S3 to a full HD in the Galaxy S4 and the Galaxy S5. And then Samsung integrated a Quad HD display in the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S7. So based on past behavior, Samsung is expected to have a better display in the Galaxy S8.
Last month, Samsung also showcased a 5.5” 4K display (3840 x 2160 resolution) with an 806ppi pixel density:
“Considering various factors including the production yield rate for the next-generation display expected to improve in the coming months, the 5.5-inch AMOLED will be deployed in the next Galaxy smartphone, presumably, named the S8,” said a UBI Research official via Korea Herald.
What other features are the Galaxy S8 devices expected to have? The flat Galaxy S8 variant will likely have a 5.2-inch 4K display whereas the larger device will sport a curved 5.5-inch edge screen. And the upcoming Samsung flagship devices are also expected to have a fingerprint sensor, an 18-megapixel camera, 5GB of RAM, a water-resistant IP68 rating and a battery higher than 4,000 mAh. And it may sound farfetched, but it is believed that the Galaxy S8 will have 5G connectivity.
Samsung would not be the first company that creates a smartphone with a 4K display. About seven months ago, Sony released a device with a 5.5-inch 4K display called the Xperia Z5 Premium.
Samsung will be announcing another set of devices on August 2nd – which will be the successors to its Galaxy Note 5 phablets. These devices are expected to be part of the Galaxy Note 7 series. Why is it going to be called the Note 7 instead of the Note 6? It is believed that Samsung wants the Note device numbers to match up with the Galaxy device numbers going forward.
Rumor has it that the Galaxy Note 7 specifications will include a 5.8-inch AMOLED Quad HD curved edge display, a Snapdragon 823 chip (or Exynos 8890), an iris scanner, 6GB of RAM, 32GB internal storage and a USB Type-C port. In a leaked Samsung invitation for August, there is a tagline that says: “Write on the edge of something great.” This is an indication that the S Pen will be able to write on the curved display of the upcoming Note device. There is another rumor that says Samsung will be releasing a foldable device codenamed the Galaxy X in early 2017 as well.
