It’s time OnePlus gets on board the hype train and brag about its new upcoming flagship
The Chinese company OnePlus has come a long way since 2014 when it first announced its flagship smartphone. OnePlus One was released on April 23, and was termed as the “flagship killer.” It turned heads and raised questions, and before the din could die down, out came OnePlus 2 and OnePlus X.
And Rumors Have it..
It’s time for the OnePlus 3. Rumors have started the hype bandwagon, something the company feeds off largely. With two flagship phones announcement in 2015, people expect a same strategy in 2016, but we think folks at OnePlus will head toward wearable category this year.
News reports confirm one thing that the April 7 event slated by OnePlus will not be the stage for the next smartphone. OnePlus One was released on April 23, 2014, OnePlus 2 on July 28, 2015, OnePlus X on October 29, 2015 — hence, our contribution to the speculation is that OnePlus 3 would be released sometime in late June this year.
Display
The company has already confirmed that the phone will be an awesome device, part and parcel of their hype strategy. As far as the specifications are concerned, rumors have it that the OnePlus 3 display size would be the same as its predecessor, i.e. 5.5-inch Quad HD display, nearing 500ppi. The benchmark leak from AnTuTu, however, claims that the display would still be a 1080p one though.
Power
Under the hood, the OnePlus 3 is expected to house the latest Soc from Qualcomm, Snapdragon 820. The company is proud of building a device that offers the best specs at a price that is difficult to beat. RAM is expected to be 4GB along with 32GB as the built-in base storage and the option to expand via microSD card slot.
Camera
The AnTuTu benchmark also indicates that the OnePlus 3 will have a 16MP rear sensor and an 8MP front one. While increasing the megapixel count from last year’s flagship device might seem like a boost up, but it’s not just the megapixel count that needs improving, image quality is also important. Chances of a dual-camera setup are quite slim for now, but we can expect a dual-tone LED flash, OIS and AF on the upcoming smartphone. When it comes out, OnePlus 3 will likely face tough competition from the Galaxy S7 and LG G5.
Other Features
OnePlus tries to be the first one to adopt latest trends in the industry and it has done that with USB Type-C. The third flagship will continue to house that, along with a fingerprint scanner and probably wireless charging. OnePlus 3 could also take the water and dust resistant route this time and introduce its first-ever smartphone to have such a certification.
Battery
Battery life is another area where OnePlus 3 is already ahead of the curve. Last year OnePlus 2 housed a 3,300mAh battery, OnePlus One had a 3,100mAh and while there is no such indication, we speculate the OnePlus 3 battery to be 3,500mAh, after all bigger is better in this case.
Design
The look and feel of the last two smartphones i.e. the design aspect has more or less remained the same. However, it is speculated that this time around the OnePlus 3 will be different. Some of the design ideas would be borrowed from One Plus X and the focus would be on making the phone look premium and stylish. The company has to do something unique and it could play around with the design element.
Price
As far as the price point is considered, OnePlus 3 is expected to carry on the company’s philosophy and stay affordable. The base model of the smartphone would be somewhere above $379. The current price of OnePlus 2 is $349 for the 64GB model, while OnePlus X is available for $249. The company even introduced an installment plan option to make it convenient for users. However, do remember that a 19.99% APR does apply.
Stand Out From the Crowd
The invite-only system had to be dropped because sales weren’t pouring in and the strategy wasn’t effective. Now that OnePlus 2 and OnePlus X are already available in the market invite-free, the only strong thing is the price point. OnePlus does get points for affordability, however, everyone is stepping their ball game and if Apple felt the need to introduce an iPhone 5S look-alike iPhone SE for $399, then things are heating up. OnePlus isn’t alone in affordable smartphone market; it faces competition from Xiaomi, another Chinese powerhouse, which offers premium smartphone at affordable rates. However, due to availability issues, it is still not a big deal in the North American markets. This provides OnePlus the opportunity to cash on as much as it can. For doing so, OnePlus 3 needs to make a compelling case for users to buy and not opt for the high-end Galaxy S7, LG G5, or iPhone,6S for that matter.
