Pebble Reveals Trio Of New Devices: No Longer Just A Smartwatch Company

Pebble has unleashed three new devices onto Kickstarter – going back to the crowdfunding platform that has provided so much success for the Redwood City startup in the past.
The new range is made up of the Pebble Core, the Pebble 2 and the Pebble Time 2.

The all new Pebble 2 (Pebble)

Starting with the latter, because it’s the highest profile of the new Pebble smartwatches, The Time 2 is a direct sequel to the Pebble Time that launched last year.
It packs a color e-paper display that is 50 percent bigger than the orginal’s and boasts 80 percent more pixels. The battery life remains at an impressive 10 days and there’s a built in heart rate monitor for more in-depth fitness tracking.
Made from stainless steel and available in gold, silver and black designs, the Pebble Time 2 costs $169 if you back now on Kickstarter, and will be sent to backers in November.

The Pebble 2, as you probably guessed, is a sequel to the original Pebble that literally Kickstarter the cult smartwatch following four years ago. Like the Time 2, it too packs heart rate monitoring technology and the price is kept down as a result of the monochrome display.
That price – on Kickstarter at least (the RRP will be slightly higher) is $99. That’s pretty decent given the sporty watch is waterproof to 30m, so it’s good for swimming. It comes in five different colors.
The Pebble app ecosystem, of course, is extended to these duo of new smartwatches – and in the case of the Pebble 2 that means compatibility for more than 13,000 apps.

The Pebble Core boasts Spotify streaming (Pebble)

The most interesting new Pebble device isn’t a smartwatch at all. The Pebble Core is a 3G connected wearable device that packs an array of features – all designed for runners who don’t want to take their phones out with them when they hit the streets; or don’t necessarily want to wear a sports watch.
The Core packs GPS, so it can accurately track your runs – and it will even sync with popular running apps like Runkeeper, Strava, MapMyRun, Google Fit and Under Armour Record.
The 3G connectivity is on board so as wearers can stream Spotify music to their headphones while out and about – although this will mean people will need a separate data SIM deal. Either that or face fiddly SIM swapping sessions between their smartphones and their Core.
Battery life is nine hours with GPS tracking and Spotify streaming up and running, and there are bunch of other useful features such as voice memos, SOS alerts and one tap Pebble app access for things such as ordering an Uber.
The Pebble Core won’t be shipping until January 2017, however – so there’s a chance more traditional tech giants could pip it to the post with something similar. It costs just $69 though, so it could be worth the wait.
“Pebble has a rich history of giving people simple devices that do a few things really well and make life easier,” said Eric Migicovsky, Pebble’s CEO.
“Health and communications is at the heart of how people use wearables today. Pebble 2 and Pebble Time 2 combine the power of a fitness tracker with the awesome smartwatch features that we’ve developed over the last four years. With Pebble Core, we’re launching off the wrist and taking wearables to the next level.”
