Galaxy S7 and iPhone 7 Camera Shares Similarity

Apple AAPL -0.06%’s recently-granted patent for an ultra-slim camera module may be good news for camera bulge hating iPhone users happy, but now it seems those waiting for the next Samsung flagship, may also be about to get a rather skinnier Galaxy S7 camera.
According to Serial Tech Leaker, Steve Hemmerstoffer, tweeting as @OnLeaks, the Galaxy S7 camera will protrude only 0.8mm from the rear of the case, rather than the 1.7mm bulge found on the current Galaxy S6. This smaller bulge is further described as “almost imperceptible” by Hemmerstoffer

However, unlike any size-reducing camera technology rumoured to appear in the iPhone 7, the Galaxy S7’s reduced camera bulge appears to have come about as a consequence of making the rest of the phone thicker, as demonstrated in a further tweet from @OnLeaks.
Personally, I consider this a most welcome move, as I would much rather see a slightly thicker handset with cleaner lines and room for a much larger battery, rather than a phone kept as thin as possible at all costs and purely for reasons of aesthetics.
I’m sure, if these rumours turn out to be true, that Apple will make a big deal of the new slimmer camera module and, to be fair, the iPhone 7 would be outdoing Samsung by delivering an entirely bulge-free camera sitting completely flush with the rear of the case.
How much of an advantage this might turn out be will lie in the difference, in real terms, between “almost imperceptible” and not there at all.
Much more important than any battle of the bulge, will be the difference in performance between the two cameras. While Samsung is expected to reduce picture resolution from 16 megapixels down to 12, Apple’s recent small form factor camera patent allows the company to fit a sensor with a physically larger surface area into a smaller space, potentially improving light-gathering performance significantly.
Of course, given Jony Ive’s much-publicised hatred of the camera bulge, it’s hardly beyond the realms of possibility that Apple has prioritised its removal above quality gains which could be achieved with the new camera module design had they retained the current camera’s dimensions.
Whatever the outcome, it’s shaping up to be a very exciting time for fans of smartphone photography.
